Judicial statistics have confirmed the high number of cases being brought before the CJEU and the General Court of the European Union for the fifth consecutive year. The overall trend highlights the increasing demand for judicial services in the EU.
The rise in case numbers also emphasizes the need to ensure that the EU’s judicial system operates efficiently and effectively. Measures the EU has taken to improve the functioning of its judicial system include, increasing the number of judges and support staff and implementing new digital tools to streamline the processing of cases.
Regarding the cases brought before both courts, Mr. Koen Lenaerts, President of the CJEU, emphasised that the Courts’ decisions directly affect major issues, saying that:
… the Institution is being called upon more than ever before to adopt judicial decisions on sensitive matters. Whether on preserving the values intrinsic to the rule of law, protection of the environment, combating discrimination, protection of privacy and personal data, enforcing competition rules against digital giants, or protection for consumers, the decisions of the Court of Justice and of the General Court are directly affecting the major issues of today’s world.
